Welcome to Yoga Voice! The idea for this podcast came as I crossed the Australian desert on my motorcycle. I rode 19000 klm around Australia and listened to a lot of podcasts along the way. I was influenced and inspired by what I was listening to and wanted to create a conversation about yoga with the beautiful and brave people who teach it. When Im riding I experience moments of profound clarity and presence. I become open to receive the teachings in whatever form they may come and am inspired to bring the practice into everything that I do. It is from this space of deep gratitude and wild adventure that Yoga Voice was born. I hope you enjoy and contribute to the evolving conversation of yoga.

You can download the show by going to Itunes here or you can click on the link to the right for the latest shows and that will take you to a site where you can listen or download without using Itunes.

Julia Mccabe

Julia Mcbabe! And she is, a total babe. There is something special about Julia and her classes. When I first took her class I couldn't put my finger on what it was that I loved so much and I think that's why I loved it so much- you digg? I think Julia's magic happens somewhere between earth momma desert dancer and ac/dc party girl..... that could just be me though. I think you'll have to take her class or go to Nicaragua with her and report back to me.
Check out her scholorship program, this is an amazing opportunity.... it really is. Its called The passion Project and the deadline is August 24th,
Passion Project Info.pdf
If that link doesnt work ( and even if it does) check out her really pretty and easy to navigate website and contact her for all the info.

Josh Chen

Can you imagine teaching yoga at 16? Neither can I. Josh Chen, on the other hand can see no other way. He has such a great mix of innocence, wisdom and squish his cheeks cuteness. My favorite part is when he talks about how much hes grown from the ages of 15 to 16. Right, I think the lessons he learned in one year has taken me about 10! To each their own right??? Josh is a great reminder that our teachers come in all shapes, sizes and ages and if we keep our mind open we can learn from them all. Thank you Josh.
Here he is in action

Sjanie McInnis

Sjanz, as she is affectionately called, let me interview her for 90 whole minutes, all while her little bambinos snoozed. Sjanie, without a doubt, has been a very influential teacher in my life. Because of this I had a family of hyper active butterflies in my belly even though I have known her for years and she is one of the most accessible and humble teachers going. I wanted to do her students proud, she is so loved and I didn't want people to be listening and cursing my name because I didn't ask the questions they would have asked or I didn't allow space for her to drop any thought bombs. Lucky for me it's not hard to get the goods from Sjanie and no matter what she will make you stop and think. I was worried though, as I always am after an interview, that I didn't quite "get it" or that I didn't get to the heart of the teacher and that I didn't live up to my intention which is to add to the deeper conversation of yoga and possibly a deeper understanding of the teachings, possibly. Im going to keep on plugging away at it though and learn from each one because my motorcycle and the desert told me to.
Listen to her interview and then go to her blog to find out everything you need to know.

She will also be teaching at the Wanderlust Festival in Whistler, B.C.  http://whistler.wanderlustfestival.com/

Are you going to Wanderlust?? Yes! lets play, it will be oh so fun!

Alex Mazerolle

Yay! This is my 10th episode!
Among many things, Alex Mazerolle si the founder and creator of Girlvana Yoga.

Girlvana brings the practice of yoga to teenage girls in an accessible and relevant context. I think we can all agree yoga would have helped navigate the muddy waters of high school, if only for an hour at a time. I think it's a bit obvious and redundant for me to sing the praises of the teachers who do the podcast, as if I'm going to bad mouth anyone, but Alex is seriously awesome! She was super bubbly and personable and very easy to interview, so easy I almost forgot we were recording at times.

Here is a video of Alex introducing Girlvana!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr2gSKLkepU&feature=player_embeddedIf you live in Vancouver and know any teens who could use yoga send them to Alex!! Actually if you love in Vancouver and could use some yoga, send yourself to Alex!

Mark Eilers

Neti Neti, not this not that, a meditation Mark learned during his time at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikish, India. Marks' Grandfather has lived as a swami at this ashram for over 40 years while his other Grandfather served as a minister in Vancouver, B.C. Mark is a solid guy with a lot to share and although he is not technically a yoga teacher I consider him to be a great source of inspiration and knowledge both experienced and studied.

Will Blunderfield

Tuned in, tapped in, turned on.  Will Blunderfield was so much fun to talk to, I felt like I was getting my own personal show complete with characters, singing and piano playing. I have never taken one of Wills classes but his reputation precedes him and I knew he would be a great person to have on the podcast.  I found myself at the same cafe as Will one afternoon so I took the opportunity to introduce myself and ask him to be on the podcast.  Immediately Will was on board and genuinely supportive of my adventures in podcasting and my intention behind Yoga Voice. Will told me about being a young gay man with no public role models, the power of eye liner and harem pants, The Secret, his struggle with depression and insecurities, humping stationary bikes in spin class and his vision of being the light house. Will has a lot of love to give and a lot to share, if you see him in a cafe or yoga studio do not hesitate to introduce yourself!! Thank you Will for another great conversation.

Daniel Shaw

Daniel is the second person I have interviewed who once lived in my current apartment. It has great hardwood floors and lots of natural light, its no wonder this apartment has attracted so many yoga people, or yogis I guess we are called. Daniel teaches all over Vancouver and gets himself to class on his trusted and loved fixed gear bicycle.  I learned a lot about Daniel in this interview and what I found most intriguing was his life as an aspiring body builder! Daniel holds sound healing workshops throughout the city so be sure to check out his latest one on Saturday June 9th at Eastside Yoga Studio from 2-4pm and again on July 14th, same time same place. You can find information for the work shop here, http://www.facebook.com/events/353008788093958/

Nathalie Saunderson

In this interview Nathalie shares with us an honest and raw account of her struggle with anorexia and her eventual recovery. It is this struggle which brought her to the practice and continues to inspire her teaching today.  Our greatest teachings always seem to come from the darkest of circumstances. It is the climbing out of these circumstances which gives us our deepest compassion, wisdom and humility.  I am so grateful to those who are willing to share their struggle as a way to help others. Nat has had a strong and dedicated practice for almost 10 years and brings a beautiful depth to her teaching.
Nathalie is synthesizing her love of nature and her love of yoga and holding retreats on Bowen island.  Find more information here http://santoshayogashala.ca/

Lawrence Jacob Milman

I first met Lawrence during an Anusara immersion in Sydney, Australia. Lawrence was already Anusara Inspired and had been a dedicated teacher for years. What I noticed right away was how engaged and curious he was in the material that he had studied time and time again.  His desire to learn all that he can about this practice is clear and it's that same desire and dedication that will allow him to keep evolving as a student and teacher and inspire others to do the same. One year later I moved back to Vancouver only to find Lawrence teaching at Yyoga! He calls many places home and unfortunately his time in Vancouver was transitory, Sydney's got him now! Lawrence seems to have a surplus of energy and I found myself getting more and more excited as our conversation grew legs.  Before this interview I had decided I was going to make the podcasts shorter and then Lawrence bounced through my door and it's the longest one yet! Its worth it though and for the first time in Yoga Voices long time history we talk about ......John Friend.......and Lawrence says some yoga type things in Russian.

His newest home and my favorite yoga studio in all of Sydney, Preshana Yoga Studio.  You're in for a good time Sydneysiders

Emelia Symington Fedy

Emelia Symington Fedy is Vancouvers only AcroYoga teacher!  She is also one of the funniest people I know and a natural story teller. I have to admit, after this interview I had to Wikipedia "mound of Venus," am I the only one who had never heard this term before??  Emelia has a way of turning her dark and shameful experiences into zany bits of comedic relief. Check out her off beat essays at http://tryingtobegood.com/2012/03/05/brazilian-waxing-as-spiritual-practice/

Jodie Neault

This weeks interview is with Vancouvers Rocket Yoga teacher Jodie Neault. Click her name to the right of this post to download! Jodie came over to my place, which used to be her place, and sat on my couch and told me her story. She talks about her dramatic weight loss through yoga and how the practice changed her relationship to her body and introduced her to the healing practices of pranayama. She also shares with us how yoga carried her through one of the most difficult things a person can go through and the affect it still has on her practice today. She reminded me that most days you only get one chance to practice yoga asana, one chance to do the pose so give it all you got, sweat it out, be present.  Being present is a lesson I learn over and over again, this moment is the only one we have so why is it so hard to stay in it?
Yoga helps, that's all I know!
Jodie teaches Ashtanga, core, flow, power and Yhot at the Yaletown and Highgate Yyoga locations
http://yyoga.ca/welcome/our-team/jodie-neault/
And she also teaches Hatha Yoga at Sanga, a beautiful community studio in Dunbar.

Danielle Hoogenboom

The Yoga Voice first post is with the lovely Danielle Hoogenboom.  I sat down with Danielle in her cozy yoga home on Commercial Drive. I showed up just as she was taking her compost out to the garden past the jars of moldy kombucha that live on her porch! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had a Kombucha baby go south. She made me delicious chai tea and we talked about everything from old nicknames to selfless service. You can find Danielle at www.lovelightyoga.com and you can add her on facebook where she posts her daily schedule. Here's a link to her facebook page at Love Light Yoga.
To download the podcast click Danielle Hoogenboom located to the right of the blog under the heading Yoga Voice Podcast.  It is not yet available through itunes but will be soon.
Enjoy the conversation.
